The occupation with a turbulent body of water after a severe morning thunderstorm goes back to Franz Gertsch’s early works dealing with Saintes Maries de la Mer in the South of France (“Saintes Maries de la Mer I – III,” 1971 – 72). Gertsch already produced a woodcut that took up this theme in 2013 and, based on a 1971 photograph, varied a motif familiar from his painting (“Saintes Maries de la Mer,” 2013). The present work omits the girls on the beach, focusing instead on an atmospheric seascape without persons in a free and dynamic painting style. It will be accompanied by the “Silvia” woodcuts from the so-called Rainbow series, which will be shown for the first time in a long time.
The highlight of the exhibition is made up by the new woodcut “Sommer” [Summer] (2017), which will initially be shown in Burgdorf in four coordinated colours. It concerns a printed realization of the landscape familiar from the magisterial Four Seasons Cycle (2007 –11). The new prints will be combined with the painting “Sommer” [Summer] (2008 / 09): A room is created that inspires painstaking observation and contemplation.
