When Europe’s second-greenest city disappears underneath a glistening white blanket, swap the bicycle for a sled or a pair of skis and head for the hills. At Bern’s magical Christmas markets, alpine chic, the scent of mulled wine and gingerbread, and unique handicraft await the visitors. And the many cafés in the UNESCO-listed Old City will warm your belly and your heart alike in the cold season.

When the temperatures get milder, take a walk to the Rosengarten to take in the magnificent view. Its famous cherry trees are in full bloom and flocks of birds sing songs of their adventures in the south. It’s also the perfect time for visitors to explore the many idyllic oases and use their regained energy to skip from concerts to museum exhibitions, from romantic picnics to lively parties, from serene brooks to hills underneath the starry night sky.
