Rail Bike Ride in Laupen

A rail bike ride is all about being active and having fun – beautiful views of the Sense river waterscapes and lush green meadows included.

Take a bike-like vehicle for a spin on an out-of-service railway line along the river Sense. The starting point is at Bahnweg 1 in Laupen, just a short walk from the train station. Getting to your destination, the Wittenberg recreation area, takes a maximum of thirty minutes. You’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Sense valley along the way, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even spot a hawk up above or a deer at the edge of the forest.

A rail bike fits four people. There are a total of 13 rail bikes, to be booked in advance. A rail bike ride is the perfect activity to experience with your family, a group of friends, or work colleagues. To prevent two rail bikes going in opposite directions from crossing along the way, departure in Laupen is always on the hour, and the return journey from Wittenberg on the half hour. The experience is available year-round from Wednesday to Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Further departures are at 12, 1, and 2 p.m. In July and August, the tracks are open seven days a week. As soon as there’s snow on the tracks, however, they are closed.

Once you arrive at the Wittenberg recreation area, the fun continues with different activities at which participants of all ages can test their skills.

There’s picnic tables, fire pits with firewood, boccia balls, giant chess, and nine men’s morris that can be used for free for groups of under ten people. So pack your picnic and off you go! Larger groups need to make a reservation in advance.

For groups of twelve people or more, you can book a package with catering. The food options include risotto and “Znüni” (morning snack) and “Zvieri” (afternoon snack) platters, among other things. You can also choose a BBQ, fondue, or spaghetti, and groups of 20 people or more can make their own pizzas. Drinks can be purchased at the catering kiosk without the need for advance reservation.
