Natascha Knecht - Vortrag “Pionier und Gentleman

06.11.2021 from 19:00

Travel back with her to the pioneers of the Alps in the 19th century.

Natascha Knecht, born and raised in Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland, has worked as a journalist for 25 years. She specialises in alpinism, heads the mountains section of Schweizer LandLiebe magazine, writes a column for Schweizer Illustrierte - and has published three books so far. A passionate alpinist, she has climbed a four-thousand-metre peak 53 times, and twice climbed the north face of the Stockhorn. Today she lives in Zurich.

Travel back with her to the pioneers of the Alps in the 19th century. In her multimedia lecture, she tells you about the exciting life of the mountain guide legend Melchior Anderegg (1828-1914) and the heyday of first ascents in Switzerland.

Melchior Anderegg (1828-1914) was one of the most famous mountain guides of the 19th century. Born in Zaun near Meiringen, he became a woodcarver and acquired climbing skills as a Gems hunter. As a servant at the Grimsel Hospice, he began guiding English alpinists to mountain peaks and soon shone with first ascents at home and abroad. Anderegg's skill and prudence, his intelligence and his warmth won him a number of regulars, he set the standard for mountain guides, and three times he was invited to London by the Alpine Club. Lifelong friendships also developed, especially with Lucy Walker, who thanks to him was the first woman to stand on the Matterhorn, would have liked to marry him and whom he - married and father of twelve children - accompanied to the mountains until the age of 73. Natascha Knecht uses Anderegg's life to simultaneously recount the fascinating heyday of alpinism, when enterprising Englishmen conquered the Swiss mountain peaks with the help of local guides.
