Art trail in Melchnau
Nestled into the hills, fields, and forests around the castle ruins in Melchnau are 56 “Horizons”-themed works of art by Swiss artists, many of them from the region. Some of the artists, such as Uli Sorglos and Simon Berger, have contributed several pieces. Other names, like Ahmad Al Rayyan from St. Gallen, Nathalie Büllesbach from St. Antoni in the canton of Fribourg, or Gedeon Regli from Hospenthal in the canton of Uri give the outdoor exhibition a national flair. Added Bonus: If the art trail leaves you wanting more, you can head to Galerie 63 at 63 Dorfstrasse to see more pieces by the participating artists, shown for the entire duration of the exhibition.
Art with a twist
Getting comfy on a blanket in the grass or a deck chair to enjoy a good movie with the soft murmur of the Aare river in the background and the spectacular view of Bern’s Old City: welcome to the iconic Bernese event “Marzili Movie”. On five evenings in July, the sunbathing meadow turns into an outdoor movie theatre. Marzili Movie always focuses on one country or culture – this year, it’s West Africa, contributing not only cinematographic works, but food and music as well. We’ve got our alarm clocks set for the 1st of July to reserve a spot on those deck chairs and can’t wait for the premiere! Doors and bar open at 8 p.m., the movie begins at 9:30. The event only takes place in good weather, so make sure you check the organizers’ update on their website or Social Media before 6 p.m.
If art and movie events are brought outdoors this July, why not do the same with yoga? Be it every evening at Kocherpark, at Marzili on weekends, at Altenberg, or at a surprise location every Sunday with Guerilla-Yoga: there’s all kinds of options to choose from. Where and when they take place is communicated on the respective Facebook pages or Instagram profiles. And if it happens to rain, we’re getting out our umbrellas and heading across Kornhaus bridge to the Bernisches Historisches Museum where, every Tuesday, there’s a yoga class centred around a selected exhibit. Summer, sunshine and sun salutations – what more could we ask for?
Hof17 – pop-up restaurant at an organic farm in Grafenried
Gourmet gastronomy and sustainability and inclusion don’t go together? With their organic farm and an inclusive team from the Mischbar Gastro Group, young farmers Simu and Domi prove the opposite. They offer a culinary open-air experience par excellence – using organic and seasonal ingredients, of course. So if you feel like a chic five-course meal al fresco, get some friends together and book your table now. As is customary with special experiences, you pay in advance, only the drinks (excluding water) are settled after the meal - preferably in cash.

Glamorous overnight stay outdoors
What could be better on a mild summer night than an exciting conversation with your sweetheart and enjoying a glass of champagne under the twinkling stars? At Hünigen Castle, the spectacular "Million Stars Hotel" overnight package offers pure romance and luxury – four-poster bed in the castle park, access to the luxurious loft, entry to the hotel’s own wellness area and a sumptuous breakfast included. In July and August, you can enjoy a cosy, dreamy double bed standing freely in nature next to the babbling brook Kiese. Hünigen Castle is situated at the gateway to the Emmental and can be reached by public transport or car in less than 30 minutes from Bern.
The Botanical Garden is located right next to the Lorraine bridge and just a short walk from Bern’s main station. But as soon as you step off the main road and into the “BoGa”, it will seem like you’ve been transported to a completely different world: Feel the relaxing effect of the chirping birds and swaying leaves and begin your exciting botanical journey through different continents. Strange plants such as Buddha’s hand, the squirting cucumber, or the poisonous plants in the medicinal plants section are only a few of the wonders that await. Our recommendation: check the Botanical Garden’s calendar regularly. There are numerous events hosted here, from readings to workshops to spoken word events. And make sure to pop into charming Café Fleuri before or/and after your visit.

Raclette in the summertime? Daily business in our neighbouring canton of Valais. We are feeling inspired and adding an additional twist: we’re enjoying this delicious traditional dish outside on the Raclette Stroll, which is perfect for adventurous foodies. The concept is simple: pick up a fully packed “Raclette-Rucksack” (raclette backpack) from Restaurant Lötschberg at 16 Zeughausstrasse in the Old City and off you go. Stroll through parks, along the Aare river or through Dahlhölzi Forest – the route is entirely up to you. Once you have found your favourite spot, unpack your bag, light the Rechaud candles and let the raclette fun begin! We hope this yummy summer never ends!
