Follow your nose and you will find inviting markets and small winter paradises on various squares in the old town of Bern. The Starsmarket on the Kleine Schanze is the latest addition to the Bernese Christmas markets. Some 60 huts with delicacies from all over the world, hot drinks and changing designer products invite you to shop and linger. The Starsmarket is located only a short walking distance from the station and features a large fondue chalet, weather-protected lounges and a children's area with merry-go-round.
Bern Minster Christmas Market
Enjoy the Christmas spirit far from the hustle and bustle: The Christmas market on Münsterplatz (Minster Square) offers a cozy, charming atmosphere in a beautiful setting. Local artisans sell their unique handicrafts at the foot of Bern Minster, the cathedral with the highest tower in Switzerland. Discover lovingly created arts and crafts, culinary delights, unique jewellery and much more. Tip: Rumour has it that the mulled white wine in the «Märitbeizli» (small restaurant) is the best in town!
Christmas Market on Waisenhausplatz (Orphanage Square)
The Bernese Christmas market with over 30 years of tradition. On the Waisenhausplatz (Orphanage Square), 50 festively decorated stands offer a wide range of souvenirs, Christmas presents and products for everyday use. The stands are lovingly decorated and the scents of gingerbread, caramel and mulled wine hang in the air. By the way, here the restaurant «Platzhirsch» takes care of your physical well-being – perfect for fans of fondue, raclette and mulled wine!
Artisan market Münsterplattform (Minster terrace)
Over two weekends in the Advent season, the Christmas edition of the traditional craftsman's market on the Münsterplattform (Minster terrace) invites you to wander around and marvel at the sights. Artists from Bern and the surrounding areas will be presenting their exclusive, hand-crafted products at more than 100 stalls. Here, passion and love for craftmanship are plain to see.
Kambly Christmas Market in Trubschachen
The best things come in small packages: The little-known Kambly Christmas Market in the idyllic Emmental village of Trubschachen, a 40-minute train ride from Bern, is a real gem. Regional delicacies and beautiful handicrafts from local artisans are offered from festively lit Christmas chalets. Children’s eyes light up at the diverse Christmas programme with festive fairy tales in the magical forest, gingerbread decorating, and a puppet theatre, while adults will love tucking into a hearty raclette. Tip: after visiting the market, enjoy the Kambly Experience and taste all sorts of biscuits to your heart's content with around 100 different types on offer!
Huttwil Christmas Market
In the historic centre of Huttwil, a 60-minute train ride from Bern, you will find one of the biggest, prettiest, and most romantic Christmas markets in Switzerland. You can’t help but marvel at the around 100 lovingly decorated chalets. Candlelight, music, fairy tales, culinary delights, arts and crafts, the scents of winter, and great conviviality are all to be found within a small area. Tip: visit the traditional Italian Bethlehem Grotto in Rosario Martignano’s art studio, intricately created over months of work.
