Arab Weavers – Christian Kings

26.04.2020 - 08.11.2020

Inscriptions hailing Allah or a ruler are a key feature of the magnificent patterns adorning medieval silks from Spain. They were woven in the weaving centres of al-Andalus, the southern part of the Iberian peninsula under Moorish rule. In the Christian north these silks served as vestments for sacred or secular dignitaries. This exhibition presents these valuable historical sources as testimony to a lively cultural exchange.
