The Bernese are well acquainted with the Aare river – and many enjoy a quick dip in the river to cool off during the summer. But few of them know how to go about it safely. Let Stadtwellen teach you how to swim in the Aare safely. Stadtwellen offers guided Aare swimming courses for adults from Bern and the surrounding areas.
The course serves to improve your personal skills. Together with trained SLRG lifeguards, the Stadtwellen instructors show you where dangers lurk and what you can do in an emergency. During the lesson, the participants follow the flow of the Aare on the section from the Engehalde weir to Worblaufen. Besides learning the basics about safe swimming in a river, you’ll also hear some interesting details about the Aare’s history, flora and fauna. Once in Worblaufen, those who are brave enough can test their limits and swim through the Worblaufen waves, under the supervision of the lifeguards. Participants will exit the river at the Aarehütte in Worblaufen.
Some of the things you’ll learn:
- When you can swim in the Aare, and when it’s too dangerous
- How to prepare for a swim in the Aare
- The best places to enter and exit the river
- How to behave in the current, in churning water or in countercurrent
After arriving in Worblaufen, the more relaxed part of the course begins. Participants can refortify themselves with drinks and a snack, and share their experiences.
The course is organized by Stadtwellen, an association aimed at promoting safe swimming in the Aare river. Stadtwellen was founded by members of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Bern.
