We’re glad that Kaffee Montag (Café Monday) is open every day of the week. The quaint café has delicious, seasonal breakfasts and, if you’re not really an early riser, relaxed weekend brunches that go on into the afternoon. It uses fresh, regional products – the cheeses and jerky, for example, come from “Jumi” in Vechigen, just a few minutes outside of the city. The buffet is stocked with crunchy granola, soft-boiled eggs, cheese and meat platters and porridge with fruit compote. Our insider’s tip: if there’s still some room in your stomach after the hearty breakfast, try the scones with clotted cream and jam and order the “Sonntags-Kaffee mit Schuss” (Laced Sunday Coffee).
By the way: make sure you also visit the restroom while you’re there – it’s a real highlight. Why, you ask? There’s a glass floor which lets you see down into Bern’s sewage system. Sounds a bit gross, but we promise it’s not.
