Burgdorf Heart Loop

The Emmental valley with its idyllic rolling hills makes the hearts of e-bikers skip a beat. And Route 899 is no exception.

Where else in the world can you find such heavenly hills? Oh, and did you know that the e-bike was invented in the Emmental? No wonder the region is so popular with e-bike fans.

The Burgdorf Heart Loop (Herzschlaufe Burgdorf) offers a variety of landscapes, small roads with little traffic, and traditional rural buildings. Who doesn’t love the charming Emmental farmhouses with their pretty and neat flower and vegetable gardens? Route 899 is made up of the eastern and the western loop forming a figure eight around the Zähringen city of Burgdorf. We recommend riding along the eastern loop on the first day, spending the night in Burgdorf, and tackling the western loop on the second day.

The eastern loop is 48 kilometres long and takes you all the way to the hills by Wynigen, we’re you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view of Lake Neuchâtel and the Jura range. If you’re interested in history, make sure to stop at the “Glungge”: The farmhouse was built in the year 1681 and is one of the oldest farmhouses in the canton of Bern. It became famous nationwide through the movies “Ueli der Knecht” (“Ueli the Farmhand”) and “Ueli der Pächter” (“Ueli the Tenant”), based on the books by Jeremias Gotthelf.

The western loop, too, leaves nothing to be desired for e-bike and nature aficionados: With its wonderful view of the Central Plateau, this 43-kilometre route takes you to Utzigen and Mänziwilegg. Utzigen castle is worth a stop – take a break from pedalling for some history and views. Feel like sitting back and enjoying the peaceful ambiance? Visit the café in the castle’s pretty garden.

A night at the museum, anyone?
