Over 140 years ago, public fountains played an important role as a source of water in Bern. They were a meeting place – a place to chat, do the washing and of course to draw clean drinking water.
Bern’s streetscape would be incomplete without its 11 historic fountains. Just as important was the town stream, which served as a public water supply. Visible in places and underground in others, it connects the city’s fountains to this day.
